James R. DeBloom, II, M.D., a native of Rochester, New York, received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. While at Harvard, Dr. DeBloom was a four-year letter winner as an offensive tackle for the Harvard Crimson football team. He received a master’s degree from the Roswell Park Cancer Institute with an emphasis in oncology and his medical doctorate from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society for finishing at the top of his class. After finishing an internship at Rochester General Hospital where he received the Most Outstanding Intern Award, he completed his dermatology residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where he also served as chief resident. Dr. DeBloom then had the privilege of receiving his fellowship training in Mohs Surgery and facial reconstruction in Pittsburgh, PA from John Zitelli, M.D., widely considered the premier Mohs surgeon in the country and David Brodland, M.D., the past president of the American College of Mohs Surgery.

In 2006 Dr. DeBloom established the South Carolina Skin Cancer Center in Greenville, SC. He was the first fellowship trained Mohs surgeon in Upstate South Carolina and now has one of the busiest Mohs Surgery practices in the country. Each year Dr. DeBloom performs over 3000 Mohs procedures, many requiring extensive facial reconstruction.

Dr. DeBloom is one of a select few Mohs surgeons in the country who can treat melanoma using the Mohs technique.

Because of this he serves as a referral center for patients across the state with melanoma. The use of novel immunostaining to the tissue sample allows Dr. DeBloom to visualize the melanoma cells in a similar fashion to other more commonly treated skin cancers.

Dr. DeBloom is the past-president of the South Carolina Dermatologic Association. He is board certified in Dermatology and is a Fellow with the American Board of Dermatology. Dr. DeBloom is also a Fellow in the American College of Mohs Surgery. This is an organization with membership restricted only to physicians who upon completion of their dermatology residency training have completed at least one additional year of specialty fellowship training dedicated to Mohs Surgery and facial reconstruction. Additionally, Dr. DeBloom is a Fellow in the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery for whom he has also served as a member of the Board of Directors. Dr. DeBloom has authored 14 published research articles in the national and international medical literature and has lectured on skin cancers and melanoma at both national and international meetings, having been an invited lecturer at the World Melanoma Congress in Vienna as well as skin cancer meetings in Berlin, New York City, Chicago, Boston and several other locations.

Dr. DeBloom is married to Dr. Camille Mason DeBloom, a Mohs surgeon and dermatologist based in Greenwood, S.C.. They have five children.
